Biocentrism is the belief that all living things inherently have the same value. Societies that hold this view live in harmony with nature but that is not to say that they live a lifestyle that is completely free of animal products; the Hill Pandaram people for example know that animals use the environment to gather food so they feel it is okay to do that too.
Many people may think that they view animals as important but will still consume them rapidly and use them to meet their own needs without considering how they may be harmed. This is not nature-based thought, this is human-based thought which is why anthropocentrism is so common.
Anthropocentrism is the belief that humans are the most important beings in the universe. This view is heavily embedded into Western culture and due to this, many animals are used for farming, entertainment and even decoration; some argue that the way people take advantage of these creatures is the root of all ecological crisis.
However, more and more people are saying that their views sit somewhere in the middle of biocentrism and anthropocentrism. This is likely due to the world becoming increasingly aware of the negative effect humans are having on the planet. It is unlikely that humans as a whole will adopt a biocentric approach but there are certainly steps that can be taken to ensure we are more considerate.
